Where to Score Free Boxes When Moving

Moving is a pain. No matter who you are or where you’re moving to or from, the prospect of lugging your stuff fills anyone with dread.

It’s especially annoying when you don’t have enough packing boxes and have to carry your stuff by hand or throw it loose into the back of a van or car. This can be worrying if anything is fragile. Well worry not, because here’s a list of where you can score free boxes.

Retailers

Retail stores mostly carry their products in boxes. The best places to grab your boxes are computer, office supply, book, shoe, liquor, and grocery stores.

They tend to have strong and clean boxes you can easily appropriate for your needs. You can almost always count on your local grocer to have an  excess of boxes. If you’re really lucky, you might even grab some banana boxes, which are probably the biggest and strongest boxes you could get there. If another mover gets there before you, you can always come back tomorrow, depending on your schedule.

According to Apartment Therapy, Starbucks “will receive anywhere from 1-2 shipments per week (so it’s a good chance that they’ll have boxes on a weekly basis).” Since Starbucks boxes come in a variety of sizes, remember to specifically ask for their larger sized boxes.

Bookstores

If you’re a reader, you know how much books can weigh. So they come in sturdy boxes. Hit up your local bookstore to grab strong boxes for free: “Most bookstores get a shipment in once or twice a week. If you live in a major city where the bookstore sees a ton of daily traffic, shipments may be more frequent.” Stack your own books in the boxes you just rescued and keep the cycle going.

Apartment complexes

People move in and out of apartment buildings all the time. Shocker, right? Head for the office and politely ask the manager if there are any free moving boxes available. If you’re lucky, a friendly manager will be able to tell you who to talk to or where you need to go to grab them.

Additionally, if you know someone who just moved, they may have some boxes they don’t need anymore. Recycle their boxes and then pass them on to the next friend who’s moving. After all, you know how much a few free boxes can help.

Facing a Move? Rent a Portable Storage Container

Moving can be stressful, but what’s even more stressful is moving with kids. While boxes can help, there are some items that will not fit into the boxes. In such a case, a portable storage container comes in handy. At Gominis, we offer containers in three length options, 12, 16, or 20.
