As most people will tell you, moving can be one of the most stressful and anxiety-inducing experiences that you’ll ever go through. From packing all your belongings away, searching for a new place to live, financial issues, and more – there’s a lot you’ll need to take care of and consider often in a relatively short period of time.

Luckily if you’re reading this you likely already have a location in mind – Mississauga! As one of the largest cities in the Greater Toronto Area, Mississauga is an excellent choice for both work and family opportunities. In this article we’ll discuss why you should move to Mississauga and provide you with some tips to make your moving experience a breeze.

About Mississauga Ontario

As mentioned above, Mississauga is in very close proximity to Toronto – southwest along the shore of Lake Ontario and about a 30 min to 1 hour drive (depending on the time of day). This makes it an ideal choice for those working in the city but requiring more space than a Toronto home or condo can provide. With a population of over 820,000 people (2023) and being the 7th largest city in Canada, it has plenty to offer for both work- or job-related opportunities, and recreational activities.

Things to do in Mississauga.

No matter what stage of life you’re in, your family situation, or your income level, the city of Mississauga offers plenty of things to do and places to visit that will keep your coming back for more! Here are some of our favourite attractions;

Parks & Trails

If you're looking for a place with plenty of nature-walks and trails, then Mississauga is the right place for you! Preparing for the Move

Now that you’ve decided on where to live and have begun the process of purchasing your new home or renting an apartment – it’s time to start the planning phase. This step can vary drastically depending on your personal needs / family situation, but we’ll cover the main points that you’ll want to consider.

  1. Plan what items / furniture you want to bring, keep in storage, or throw away.
  2. Purchase packing supplies for moving and storage.
  3. Begin sorting through your belongings and packing things away during the moving process. Starting with things you won’t need immediately and working your way through the house.
  4. Update your personal info, subscriptions, ID’s, etc., to your new address.
  5. Transfer yours or your families academic and medical records to your new school or doctor.
  6. Cancel utility services at your current home and set up utilities at your new home or apartment (if applicable)
  7. Forward your mail to your new address (can set up at the post-office).

The last thing you’ll want to consider is your moving options. In the section below we’ll break down some of the different choices you have so that you may choose the option that will best suit your needs.

Moving Options

Now that you’ve taken care of most of the important items for your move – the last thing you’ll want to consider is HOW you’ll move. This can be a critical point where you’ll either decide if your move was a pleasant or terrible experience.

Moving Trucks

When most people think of moving, they only consider renting a moving truck to haul their belongings to their new address. While this can be a simple task for those moving small homes or apartments – being able to do it all in one trip – it can be tiresome for anyone with a large family or home to pack away. From having to lift everything several feet into the moving truck and then driving it yourself to your new destination (all within the rental time limit) it can be a cause for headaches and anxiety.

Movers

In an ideal world we would all love to have movers come in and take care of our move for us. From lifting all the heavy or awkward furniture and boxes to delivering it right to your new home and placed in the room you want it – it really is the gold standard of moving services. However, these services can be very expensive and depending on which company you choose – it can also become a nightmare.

We recommend that if you’re going to be using movers that you do your research first and find an established and reputable company.

Portable Moving Containers

One of the best choices you’ll have for your move is to rent a portable moving container (or moving pod as they’re commonly referred to). These convenient and handy pieces of equipment are essential a storage container that is brought to your home whenever you need it, so that you can pack and load it at your own pace. Most companies can also deliver it to your new address for you once it’s loaded so that you don’t have to worry about navigating your large truck or trailer through the city. On top of this, they are also much more affordable than movers and can end up being just as cost effective as a moving truck.
