Going where the money is? Good for you. Moving cities to further your career can lead to more opportunities. But it can also lead to disappointment if you don’t ask yourself the right questions.

1. Will I Love My New Job?

Taking on a new job is a very big commitment. This is especially true when you’ll be relocating. Take the time to consider your perspective position and decide if it’s really where you want to be. You don’t want to pack up portable storage units for moving only to discover your new job isn’t a good fit.

2. Can I Afford the Cost Of Living?

With some moves, particularly from big cities to a smaller towns, you might be surprised by a significant decrease in your living expenses. 3. Do The Pros Outweigh The Cons?

There are many benefits to relocating for a different position, but you have to make sure that these benefits outweigh the potential risks. Make a list, comparing all the things you look forward to, to the things you think you’ll miss. Andy Teach, author of From Graduation to Corporation, says you should always think about the long-term consequences of moving before you make the decision. If you’re not sure that moving is a good idea afterwards, it may not be.

4. Will My Family Be Happy?

It may be most important for your family to be comfortable with your new home and city. Will your kids be happy with their new school? Will your spouse be able to find employment as well? Make sure you talk to your family and get their opinion before your move.

5. What’s My Backup Plan?

If things at your new job don’t work out, it’s very important to have a backup plan. You don’t want to be stuck in a new place with no source of income. Make sure you consider other avenues of making money and whether or not you’ll be able to cover your family’s expenses.
